Meet Thato Modumedi Mosohli aka SMSN T. His stage name stands for strive more, surrender never. His stage name represents him well, as Thato has had in interesting life story.

SMSN is originally from South Africa. Born in Bethlehem and raised Bloemfontein, Thato describes that he has always heard music throughout his whole life, especially living in Africa. With a love for R. Kelly and Usher as a young kid, SMSN has been interested in music for as long as he could remember. Then as he grew to be in high school, Thato started rapping casually but fiercely with his friends, battling with other groups.

SMSN recorded and dropped his first song in June of 2018. He titled it “Stay Alive” and was under the name Simpson at the time. But it was not until more recently in 2020 where Thato realized he wanted to take his music to the next level and get serious about his career. He decided to to this because of the creativity and ideas he was wanting to release into society. He describes, “I share a glimpse of how I see the world”.

SMSN considers his genre to be mainly Hip-Hop/RnB but tells us that there are some influences of Drill/Grime incorporated into his songs as well. Additionally, he considers himself to be experimental in regards to infusing Afro Jazz and deep house into his art. Thato says that this is because he grew up hearing these sounds, wanting to combine them with his own personal creativity while also showing the sounds of his roots.

SMSN’s most successful song is “Louco”. The unique and catchy sound os this track makes it irresistible, as Thato describes. “It is one of those that once it starts playing you cant help but move”.

Some of SMSN T’s inspirations include Jay-Z, Tory Lanez, Young Thug, 50 Cent, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Gunna. These artist’s influences can be heard within SMSN T’s music but their way of professionalism and business is also something that resonates with SMSN. .

Thato discusses his goals in becoming one of the biggest artists in the world and feels blessed to share his life stories and experiences through an art form he loves with a passion.
